This works for Debian, but the needed steps should also be similar for other distributions:

1. Search for a software repository that hosts the libxvidcore4 package.
2. Open the software package manager via Applications -> System Tools -> Synaptic Package Manager then typing the root (superuser) password when requested.
3. In the menu Settings select Repositories.
4. In the Repositories widow click the New button.
5. In the URI enter the repositories found in step 1. For example: deb http://debian.jones.dk sarge misc
6. Click the OK button.
7. Click the Reload toolbar button.
8. In the menu Edit select Search
9. In the search window enter the text libxvidcore4.
10. Click the Search button.
11. Right click on the libxvidcore4 package, and from the popup menu select Mark for Installation
12. Click the Apply toolbar button.
